Tricky crane installation at the terminal.
The most important requirement of the terminal operator Contargo Industriepark Frankfurt-Höchst GmbH: Handling cargo for ship, rail and road transport must not be restricted during the gantry crane assembly. Therefore, our team had to plan the deployment of the mobile crane skilfully so that logistics operations could continue during the lifting work. The BKL Frankfurt team turned to CAD planning to develop a special crane solution. They set up the cranes to guarantee access for delivery trucks at all times, while avoiding any interruptions in the rail transport to the terminal.On the river side of the terminal, the BKL team took the stability of the quay wall into account. Ensuring its structural integrity and safeguarding the assembly, the force had to be directed straight through the wall. Accordingly, they positioned the mobile cranes in such a way that the load distribution plates were mounted on a few, specifically selected points above the tracks.
And that's not all: in addition to the highly complex crane installation, the extremely limited space required meticulous timing for the approach and setup of the five mobile cranes.

The first and heaviest lift begins.
Mobile cranes with high lifting capacities were required to lift the 140-tonne main girder of the gantry crane: on one side, the BKL team used an LTM 1450-8.1 with 134 tonnes ballast and a 28-metre luffing jib. On the other side, they deployed a GMK6450-1 with 135 tonnes ballast and an LTM 1230-5.1 with 72 tonnes ballast.
Together, the three cranes lifted the main girder at its three anchor points to a height of 40 metres.
Highlight of the crane concept: Positioning the 1st and 2nd support.
While the three cranes held the main girder in the air, an LTM 1300-6.2 mobile crane and a GMK5250XL-1 placed the 17-tonne supports in the designated position. These first two supports carry the trimodal gantry crane on the water side. To position the first support, the crane professionals configured the 300-tonne mobile crane with 96 tonnes ballast and a telescopic boom of almost 54 metres. The 250-tonne crane, equipped with 70 tonnes ballast, took over the lifting of the 2nd support.
One highlight of the crane concept: the LTM 1300-6.2 stood directly behind the LTM 1450-8.1 during the lift, manoeuvring the support into its final position by reaching past the 450-tonne mobile crane.
Well thought out - lifting of the shore-based supports.
Once the two water-side supports had been installed, the 3rd and 4th supports on the shore-side had to be lifted in to complete the assembly of the gantry crane. To do this, our crane experts moved the 250 and 300 tonne mobile cranes within the construction site. With lifting heights of up to 29 metres, the experienced mobile crane operators positioned the last two parts of the gantry crane precisely - and even in this tight space, without interrupting ongoing terminal operations.
