How much does it cost to hire a heavy duty crane?

The price of hiring a heavy duty crane is influenced by various factors, such as load capacity, hook height, the type of crane required, the duration of the rental and any additional services.

Generally speaking, a mobile heavy duty crane is usually the better option for short-term use, while a heavy duty construction crane is preferable for long-term use. This is often the case even for a one-month rental period, as the following price example for a 150 km job illustrates:

Hire a heavy duty crane: prices tower crane

  • BKL System Sáez TLS 1100 50T
  • Hook height: 40 m, radius: 85 m
  • Load capacity: 7.1 t at its peak, 50 t to 16 m

  • Duration: 1 month
  • Costs assembly / dismantling: €50,000 each
  • Cost of heavy duty crane hire per month, including insurance and accessories: €26,000
  • Total cost of heavy duty crane hire: €126,000

Here you can find prices for tower cranes.

Hire a heavy duty crane: prices mobile crane

  • Liebherr LTM 1450-8.1
  • With jib 84 m
  • Load capacity: 7 t in the peak, 14 t to 32 m

  • Duration: 20 working days
  • Call-out charges, costs assembly / dismantling: €30,000
  • Cost of hiring a heavy duty crane for 20 working days, including a crane operator: €100,000
  • Total cost of heavy duty crane rental: €130,000

Frequently asked questions about hiring heavy duty cranes.

  • When is it useful to hire a heavy duty crane?
A heavy duty crane is useful when particularly large or heavy loads need to be lifted. Typical heavy lifting operations include, for example, lifting steel or concrete girders during bridge construction, or lifting power station components, generators and transformers. Heavy duty cranes are also frequently used in the construction of data centres, airports and other large-scale projects.

  • Which heavy duty crane is suitable for my lifting project?
The most suitable large crane for a project depends on its specific requirements. Depending on the nature of the project and the duration of the heavy duty lifts, heavy duty mobile cranes or heavy duty tower cranes may be used, e.g.. The choice of crane depends on various factors, including the weight and dimensions of the load, the required hook or lifting height, the radius, the available space and the static conditions on the construction site. BKL assists with selecting the right crane and, if requested, develops the complete lifting concept.
  • What is the difference between a heavy duty construction crane and mobile crane?
Construction cranes and mobile cranes differ in terms of their load capacity, mobility and design, for example. Mobile cranes are mounted on a chassis, making them mobile. This makes them flexible, versatile and suitable for short-term or changing assignments. Tower cranes designed for heavy duty lifting are top-slewing cranes. They are stationary cranes with a vertical tower and a horizontal jib that can rotate through 360 degrees. These cranes can be configured individually and are capable of lifting heavy loads high and far. They are often used on long-term construction projects or large-scale projects.

  • How many tonnes can a heavy duty crane lift?
The maximum load capacity of a heavy duty crane depends on its type and model. For instance, the maximum load capacity of an LTM 1650 mobile crane from the BKL fleet is 700 tonnes. Meanwhile, a Liebherr 1000 EC-H construction crane can lift up to 50 tonnes to a height of 92 metres.

  • Can a crane be used when carrying out demolition work?
Yes, a crane can also assist with lifting operations as part of demolition work. A heavy duty crane would be useful for, e.g., lifting components such as dismantled steel beams, concrete elements or facade elements during demolition. Not only can heavy components be lifted, but greater lifting heights can also be achieved. In specialised demolition work, blade and wire saws are used to cut chimneys or reinforced concrete walls, which are then removed by crane without causing any vibration. This method is particularly gentle and is used specifically in renovation projects.
  • Which heavy duty crane can be hired at BKL?
At BKL you can hire over 40 heavy duty construction crane with up to 1,100 tonne-metres and up to 50 tonnes load capacity as well as more than 15 heavy duty mobile crane up to 700 tonnes load capacity. The range of mobile cranes include 300-, 450- and 700-tonne cranes. Depending on the model, these cranes can achieve radii of up to 112 metres and lifting heights of up to 152 metres. In total, BKL has a rental fleet of more than 700 cranes and is therefore able to offer specialised crane solutions as well.

  • How much does a heavy duty crane cost?
It is not possible to provide a fixed price for a heavy duty crane. The hire price depends on various factors, including load capacity, radius, hook height, crane type, hire period and operating conditions. Additional services, such as assembly, logistics and specialist equipment, can also affect the total cost. Here is an example of a standard configuration: At BKL, hiring a 40-tonne Liebherr 1000 EC-H 40 crane with a hook height of 30 metres costs €32,000 per month, and the heavy duty crane assembly costs an additional €45,000*. Our crane experts will be happy to provide you with a personalised, no-obligation quote for your lifting project.
